Wielding decades of experience in the field of information technology, Debbie L. Grafton has found success as the senior application analyst and programmer within the Criminal Division of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia since 2011. She previously served as a contractor for the Washington, D.C.-based court from 1988 to 2011; early on, she played an integral role in updating the old system by replacing it with a state-of-the-art online application in 1991. Today, she’s developed a brand new system to track criminal cases.

Backed by a strong education, Ms. Grafton earned bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and computer science from East Carolina University and graduated cum laude in 1979. By this point, she had already been working with the U.S. Department of Transportation and was subsequently active with the U.S. Department of Agriculture beginning in 1983. She worked for the Federal National Mortgage Association briefly before joining the Superior Court.

An expert in SQL programming, Ms. Grafton attributes her decades-long career to her dedication and hard work. She considers herself a perfectionist, utilizing this mindset in her impactful, innovative programming work. One of her many passions, too, has been guiding future generations in the technology industry, whom she advises to prioritize hard work and meticulousness in checking that work. For her, this approach has been crucial to her success.

Looking ahead, Ms. Grafton hopes to retire in the next five years, and envisions dedicating more time to her hobby of conducting genealogy research.
